Pet Food & Treat Safety Frequently Asked Questions

E-Beam can achieve strong microbial reduction for Salmonella, Listeria, E. coli, and other pathogens at doses that do not affect texture or appearance. Reduction levels depend on dose selection and target organisms. Many pet food manufacturers use E-Beam specifically to reduce recall risk for high protein treats and chews. Microbial reduction of 10-5 (“log 5 kill”) is a common target for pet food producers.

Most dry foods, jerky treats, and chews maintain flavor, aroma, and nutrient levels at typical microbial reduction doses. The short exposure time avoids heating, drying, or cooking effects. Sensitive oils, probiotics, or natural colorants may require a max dose review, but most products remain unchanged.

E-Beam treats fully packaged/sealed products, which eliminates recontamination risk. It also bypasses limitations associated with thermal processing, fumigation, or kill steps that only apply upstream. The ability to process sealed bags or cartons provides a final control point before distribution, which significantly lowers recall exposure.

Yes. Treats, chews, biscuits, kibbles, and jerky products can be processed in their final retail packaging. Stand up pouches, gusseted bags, cartons, and multi packs typically achieve excellent dose penetration as long as density and bag thickness fall within standard E-Beam parameters.
